7 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Business Coverage (and How a Simple Afternoon Fixes Them)

Hey there. Gabriel Figueroa here. When I’m not working with the volleyball club, I’m thinking about how we protect the things that matter most. Whether it’s a team on the court or a business in the heart of Texas, the principle is the same: you can’t win if you aren’t protected from the hits you don’t see coming.
It is Thursday, April 9, 2026. The world looks a little different than it did even a couple of years ago. Technology is faster, the weather is wilder, and the rules of business insurance have shifted. I see business owners every day who are running hard, growing their dreams, and doing everything right, except for one thing. They are carrying insurance policies that are basically "ghosts." They look like they are there, but when you reach out to grab them during a crisis, there’s nothing but air.
The good news? You don’t need a week-long retreat to fix this. You just need one strategic afternoon. Let’s walk through the seven most common mistakes I’m seeing right now and how we can get you back on solid ground.
1. Thinking "General Liability" is a Magic Shield
This is probably the biggest mistake in the book. Many folks buy a General Liability (GL) policy and think, "Okay, I’m covered for anything that happens at work."
Here is the reality: General Liability is mostly for "slips and falls" or if you accidentally break someone’s property. It does not cover you if you give bad advice, make a professional error, or miss a deadline that costs your client money. If you are a consultant, an IT pro, or even a specialized contractor, you need Professional Liability (often called Errors and Omissions).
I’ve seen Texas business owners lose sleep because they thought their GL policy would handle a lawsuit over a service mistake, only to find out they were totally on their own.
The Afternoon Fix: Pull out your policy "Declarations" page. Look for "Professional Liability" or "E&O." If you don’t see it, call your agent. If your business involves your expertise, this isn't optional.

2. Underestimating the $14 Trillion Elephant (Cyber Risk)
It’s 2026. If you use a computer, a smartphone, or take credit cards, you are a target. There’s a common myth that hackers only go after the "big fish." The truth? Small businesses are the new favorite target because they usually have weaker digital locks.
We’ve talked about this before, the global cost of cybercrime has hit staggering numbers. Does cyber liability really matter in 2026? The answer is a resounding yes. A single data breach or a ransomware attack can shut a family business down for good in less than 48 hours.
The Afternoon Fix: Check if you have a standalone Cyber Liability policy. Most standard business policies only offer a "tiny" bit of cyber coverage (maybe $10k or $25k), which won't even cover the cost of the lawyers, let alone the recovery.
3. Ignoring the 2026 Climate Shift
If you live in Texas, you know the weather has a mind of its own. Between the intense heatwaves, the unexpected freezes, and the hail storms that look like they're dropping golf balls from the sky, property insurance has changed.
In 2026, many insurance carriers have updated their "climate risk" models. This means some things that used to be covered are now excluded, or your deductible for wind and hail has spiked so high that you’re essentially "self-insured" without knowing it. Is your business uninsurable? That is a question you want to answer before the storm clouds roll in.
The Afternoon Fix: Look at your property deductible. Is it a flat dollar amount (like $1,000) or a percentage (like 2% or 5% of the total value)? If it's a percentage, you might be responsible for $20,000 or $50,000 before the insurance kicks in.

4. The "Ghost" Sub-Limits
This is a sneaky one. You might have a $1 million policy limit, but hidden in the fine print are "sub-limits." This means for specific things, like "Employee Dishonesty" or "Outdoor Signs" or "Electronic Data", the policy might only pay out a tiny fraction of that million.
I recently spoke with a shop owner who thought he was fully covered, but a sub-limit on "Identity Recovery" meant his policy only covered $5,000 of a $30,000 problem.
The Afternoon Fix: Ask your agent for a "Sub-limit Summary." It’s a quick way to see where the caps are. If your inventory is worth $100k but your "Theft" sub-limit is $10k, you have a problem.
5. Choosing the Lowest Price Instead of the Best Protection
I get it. We all want to save money. But in the world of insurance, "cheap" usually means "hollow." A policy that costs $50 less a month might have ten extra exclusions that leave you wide open.
When you shop solely on price, you are often buying a policy that won't actually be there when you need it. At Eagle-Watch Solutions, we believe in being educational. We want you to understand the value of what you’re buying, not just the cost. Why everyone is talking about risk stacking is a great place to start understanding how different layers of protection work together.
The Afternoon Fix: Stop looking at just the premium. Look at the "Exclusions" page. If you see things listed there that are core to your business, that cheap policy is actually very expensive.

6. The Missing Bridge Between Family and Business
For most small business owners in Texas, the business is the family legacy. If the business gets sued, the family's assets could be at risk. If a disaster hits the home, the business might suffer because the owner is distracted.
Are your personal and business policies "talking" to each other? Often, people have a great business policy but a weak home policy, or vice versa. If a legal claim exceeds your business limits, could they come after your personal property? In many cases, yes.
The Afternoon Fix: Consider a "Surgical Bundle" approach. This isn't just about getting a discount; it’s about making sure there are no gaps between your life at home and your life at work. The simple trick to bulletproof your business and family is ensuring they are viewed as one ecosystem.
7. Forgetting the Umbrella
Think of an Umbrella policy as the "backup goalie." If a claim is so big that it blows through your standard limits: say, a major car accident involving a company vehicle or a serious injury on your property: the Umbrella kicks in to cover the rest.
Without it, anything over your limit comes directly out of your pocket, your bank account, or your business equity. For a relatively small cost, an Umbrella policy provides massive peace of mind.
The Afternoon Fix: Ask for a quote on a $1M or $2M Umbrella policy. You might be surprised at how affordable it is to double or triple your protection.

How to Fix It All This Afternoon
You don't have to be an expert to get this right. You just have to be intentional. Here is my "Quick-Start" guide to getting your protection where it needs to be:
Gather Your Docs: Grab your current business, home, and auto policies (digital or paper).
The "What If" Game: Ask yourself: "What if my website went down today?" "What if a customer fell in the lobby?" "What if a Texas hailstorm totaled my roof?"
Get a Second Set of Eyes: You wouldn't try to coach a volleyball team without a strategy, right? Don't try to manage your risk without a coach.
At Eagle-Watch Solutions, we’re here to help you navigate these 2026 shifts. Whether it's updated regulations or new climate trends, we make the complex stuff simple. 7 risk management mistakes you're making can be corrected faster than you think.
